The City of Glen Cove Youth Bureau

Founded in 1981, The City of Glen Cove Youth Bureau is the premier organization in the City dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming environment so that all youth, all families, and the entire community achieve their potential. Among the services offered by Glen Cove Youth Bureau are the following:

Summer Youth Employment Program

Summer Youth Employment Program - Green Teams Available to 14-15-year-old youth residents. Applicants have little to no work experience. The program is designed to teach young teens work responsibility (punctuality, teamwork, following directions, and community involvement). Throughout the program workshops on resume writing, interviewing, and personal success are incorporated.

Internship Program

Internship Program Interns are residents ages 16-18, many stepping up from the Green Teams. After 4 months of training, interns apply for positions offered within City of Glen Cove Departments, non-profit organizations, and local business partnerships. Training includes comprehensive resume writing, master interview techniques, goal setting and time management, work ethics and etiquette, guest speakers, and video presentations. Interviews are competitive. Youth Employment Project Teens in the internship program can interview to join the YE Project - an entrepreneur program where students run the local sports stadium concession stands and community garden. This project is youth led - teens develop the work schedule, maintain and order inventory, complete press releases, interview new applicants, update social media and website to promo the program.

Glen Cove Youth Bureau Summer Camp

Open to students entering grades 1 – 6, this is a six week, full-day program. Students participate in a wide range of traditional summer camp activities including arts and crafts, sports, outdoor activity, field trips and special theme days. This is a fee-based program

The After 3 Program

The Glen Cove After 3 Program has been around for over 10 years. The After 3 program is provided through the Glen Cove Youth Bureau organization. The After 3 program helps develop and strengthen the academic, social, and emotional needs of students within the after-school program as well as in the academic/recreation summer program. Our goal is for the students to progress through elementary and middle school, and experience success in school and in life. In addition to preparing for a successful and healthy future. The after-school program is offered to students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The program runs five days a week Monday through Friday. The program is in your child/children’s individual school, except for Gribbin and Deasy students. The program hours are directly after school until 6:00 pm for Finley Middle School students, 6:10 pm for students in Connolly and Landing School, and 6:30 pm for students in Gribbin and Deasy School. The program offers a five-component meal provided by Long Island cares, homework assistance, several clubs such as cooking, art, soccer etc., and recreational time. The program also offers specials such as Positive Youth Development (PYD) and Substance Abuse Free Environment (S.A.F.E) as well as nutrition classes. Positive Youth Development (PYD) classes help build on youths strengths, provide emotional support, opportunities, help them achieve goals, and transition from one grade to the other. The Substance Abuse Free Environment (S.A.F.E) classes teaches students life skills. Life skills training focuses on self-management (analyzing problems and reducing stress and anxiety), general social skills (overcoming shyness and communication), drug resistance skills (resist pressure from others or media to use drugs). Our nutrition classes focus on healthy eating, using My plate, healthy recipes so the students can try at home with their families. The Glen Cove After 3 Summer Program is a full-day program offered to students entering kindergarten through students entering ninth grade. The program focuses on academic enrichment as well as recreational activities. The program is offered Monday through Friday. Trips are offered every Friday. Our program was designed to help prevent the loss of learning over the summer. The academic enrichment activities are based on arts, literacy, and stream. The program offers academic enrichment in the morning and recreational activities in the afternoon. The academic enrichment focuses on strengthening and developing the student's academic progress, for the student to have a smooth transition into the next school year. In the afternoon we offer recreational activities some of the activities are cooking, dance, music, sports, etc. The program also offers specials such as Positive Youth Development (PYD) and Substance Abuse Free Environment (S.A.F.E) as well as nutrition classes. Which are described in our afterschool program above.

Youth Bureau Drop-In Center

The Youth Bureau is open to students in grades 1 – 5 every day after school and on Saturdays. During the school week, students spend the first hour completing their homework and brushing up on their reading skills. The balance of the time is used to solidify friendships, play games, use the computer lab, and participate in arts and crafts and other organized activities. Students also go on trips to local attractions. The Center is open to teens in the evenings throughout the year. Students come together to socialize in a drug, alcohol, and smoke free environment. During the summer, the students go on trips to local attractions such as baseball games, museums, amusement parks, skating parks and the movies.

Mentoring

The Youth Bureau facilitates 1:1 mentoring for youth at risk. Youth are paired with adult members of the community who serve as role models for the youth. Mentors serve for 1-year terms and meetings are within the community.

Family Services Program

Assists families in need with nutritional assistance and clothing. During the past year, the Youth Bureau provided nutritional assistance to 4,500 Glen Cove residents.

Glen Cove Youth Bureau Events: Fill-A-Backpack (offering school supplies at the onset of the school year), Lights on After School, Holiday Food Baskets, Milk and Cookies with Santa, 4th of July Bike Parade, The Glen Cove Youth Bureau collaborates with many agencies in the city including: Glen Cove Beautification Committee, Glen Cove Department of Public Works, Glen Cove InterAgency Council, Glen Cove Bid, Glen Cove Hospital Northwell Health, Glen Cove Parks and Recreation Department, Glen Cove Police Department, Glen Cove Rotary, Glen Cove Senior Center, Glen Cove School District, S.A.F.E, Inc., KIWANIS The Glen Cove Youth Bureau is a member of the Glen Cove InterAgency Council, Kiwanis and Glen Cove Rotary.
