Founded in 1981, The City of Glen Cove Youth Bureau is the premier organization in the City dedicated to providing a safe and welcoming environment so that all youth, all families and the entire community achieve their potential. Among the services offered by Glen Cove Youth Bureau are the following:

Glen Cove After 3

Provides after school and summer enrichment to students in grades K – 8.  This program assists students with their studies during the school year and combats summer learning loss over the summer.   Students also combine a number of academic enrichment activities such as cooking, film making, fashion design, career exploration, etc. with positive youth development activities (anti-smoking, drug and alcohol education, healthy eating, etc.).  While the program is open to any Glen Cove student in the targeted grade range, a number of the participants come from families where English is not the primary language spoken at home, making it difficult for parents to assist the student with academic reinforcement. This is a fee based program.

Drop-In Center

The Youth Bureau is open to students in grades 1 – 5 every day after school and on Saturdays.  During the school week, students spend the first hour completing their homework and brushing up on their reading skills.  The balance of the time is used to solidify friendships, play games, use the computer lab and participate in arts and crafts and other organized activities.  Students also go on trips to local attractions.

The Center is open to teens in the evenings throughout the year.   Students come together to socialize in a drug, alcohol and smoke free environment.  During the summer, the students go on trips to local attractions such as baseball games, museums, amusement parks, skating parks and the movies.

Summer Camp

Open to students entering grades 1 – 5, this is a six week, full-day program.  Students participate in a wide range of traditional summer camp activities including arts and crafts, swimming, sports, outdoor activity, field trips and special theme days.  This is a fee based program

Youth Employment Program

Prepares middle and high school students to enter the work force.  Students are taught job etiquette, how to prepare a resume, dress for success and interview for a job.  Depending upon the age of the teen, students are then placed in jobs either with the City or with non-profit organizations and businesses around Glen Cove.

The Rent a Kid Program matches students with homeowners throughout the year to assist with gardening, snow removal and similar tasks.

The Summer Youth Employment Program employs students during the summer and some businesses hire the students on a year-round basis.

Mentoring

The Youth Bureau facilitates 1:1 mentoring for youth at risk.  Youth are paired with adult members of the community who serve as role models for the youth.

Family Services Program

Assists families in need with nutritional assistance and clothing, housing and medical referrals.  During the past year, the Youth Bureau  provided nutritional assistance to 4,426 Glen Cove residents.

Youth Council

The Glen Cove Youth Bureau  has a Youth Council, serving as the voice of youth. The Council is comprised of middle and high school students and  is very involved in community service projects throughout the city.
